Lua scripting

Ask your own questions of a log: write a short script, run it over every entry, and jump to what it finds.

55 seconds, no sound. Captions explain each step.

What the video shows

  1. A web server log with 30,577 entries, and the question: which clients keep failing?
  2. Tools > Scripts runs a Lua script over every entry in the open log.
  3. The script says what to look at (a filter that runs before Lua does), reads columns by name in OnRow for each entry in order, and emits its results as rows.
  4. The run scans all 30,577 entries in a few hundredths of a second; only the 2,828 failed requests ever reach Lua.
  5. One client stands out with 1,399 failures. Goto jumps to its first failure in the log.

Log Lion includes a starter script and a template. Scripts are plain .lua files in your Log Lion data folder.
